Laura Cowen, Alan Pope, Dave Walker and Tony Whitmore present the eighteenth Ubuntu Podcast from the UK Local Community Support Team.
In a rather belated episode we have:-
- We discuss our experience of upgrading to Ubuntu 8.10 – the Intrepid Ibex.
- We review Ubuntu Kung Fu, a book by Keir Thomas, and we give away a copy in our competition – which due to the late arrival of this podcast will be extended until 3rd December.
- The news.
- We discuss what we do to our systems after installing Ubuntu, and briefly discuss Automatix and Ultimatix.
- Finally we have your feedback.

If you have to deal with a slow internet connection, you might want to try out http://www.loband.org/
Basically the loband server downloads the web page strips out all the images, css … and then compresses the result (standard web server compression) to send to your browser. It even rewrites the links so that when you click on a link, you will be going through loband.
It does have a few limitations, in particular it will not do websites that use https (loband is not considered secure enough for that) and things can go a little squiffy with javascript. But for a lot of basic browsing, it is quite good enough, and a lot less painful than a long wait for every single page.
Hi
I am glad your 8.10 updates went so smoothly. Mine was not as straight forward however. I ran the update and it spent about 5 seconds downloading the updates, followed by an hour working out which programs it should remove (cruft?) and then deleting them. It then rebooted without installing the new kernel but having removed a few useful programs (firefox, pidgin, network manager and evolution). I then joined a number of other people on the forums who were having the same problem. I managed to copy (tar) my home folder and then install Intrepid from a CD and since then everything has been fairly smooth.
On another subject, which presenter is your equivalent of Jonathan Ross and Russell Brand’s?
Sam
Intrepid does not currently support my Nvidia Geforce 4200 gfx card.
The upgrade process does warn that graphics performance will be reduced if upgrade proceeds.
Seems there are legacy driver issues being worked on.
Haven’t upgraded yet, on 8.04 still, working perfectly, very happy with it. Although, had to buy a new wireless dongle because of a kernel regression from 6.10 to 8.04, but that’s okay, it works better anyway. Will do a clean install of 8.10 when I have more time.
I downloaded this podcast with Rhythmbox and it seemed to have missed downloaded the end of the podcast…strange. Anyway, good show.
BTW: I think Russell Brand was excellent in that Sarah Marshall movie, the star of the show.
I was surprised to hear that GIMP was removed from the Ubuntu UK CD. I have always loved GIMP for graphic design and it’s one of the few apps I can’t live without.
