I put it to you that 2011 *WAS* “The Year of the Linux Desktop”:  The drama of Canonical’s release of Unity has been the direct and indirect cause of more commentary and shifts in the status quo of the Linux community than I can recall seeing in years.  Even if desktop computing is increasingly a niche market, the attention on desktop environments will only help usability going forward, whether it be inprovements to Unity or to its competitors.

And I will make a prediction for 2012:  In the wake of their recent fork of Gnome3, Linux Mint will move away from being based on Ubuntu to being based on Debian’s Testing branch (a move they have been prototyping with their Linux Mint Debian Edition), especially with the imminent move of Ubuntu away from X and on to Wayland.

My prediction for 2012 is that Canonical and Ubuntu will make a change that will cause an uproar in the community (like when they moved the buttons to the left, or changed Banshee Amazon refferal, or Unity vs. Gnome-shell discussions)
