You mentioned an application called py-backup or pie-backup that is in Synaptic. I had a search for it in 8.10 but was unable to locate it. Has it been removed or am I just looking for the wrong thing.

A couple of things – The online back up I used was xdrive – unfortunely its methods of back up are a java webapp and Adobe Air (which I have a problems using anyway.)

because my computer is on its last legs I have been looking at somewhere to buy another one from. I am actually thinking about using efficient PC to buy myself a one.

Another remote support possibility is https://www.copilot.com/ – again based on vnc with a server to help with your connection so no IP addresses or firewall nonsense is required.

Though just checked and it only supports windows and mac. Ho hum, /me off to check out gitso.

Hey guys … I’d just like to comment a bit on the ubuntu/kubuntu conflict: I just heared about this on your podcast and I don’t want to get into what happened … but I would like to mention that I was using kubuntu for some time until I got fed with the fact that all the best features seemed to go into ubuntu first while kubuntu felt like it was lagging behind … also in terms of stability kubuntu seemed to be more buggy and troublesome especially at the release.

[…] Episode 16 of the Ubuntu podcast from the UK LoCo team has finally hit the web. This episode has been much delayed, firstly with a late recording and then a late release of said late recording. Life has been very busy for the protagonists on this show lately, with illness and trips abroad, moving house, birthdays, LUG meetings and hectic work schedules getting in the way of us all meeting up to record the show. We tried to get a VoIP setup which would provide us with high quality recordings whilst still actually enabling us to hear each other speak. The Linux Outlaws guys do this using Gizmo, as I understand it, but we wanted to stick to Free software and were using standard SIP clients. We struggled and then failed, really. For one of us, audacity could just record whilst still letting Ekiga make the call. For me, I had to use arecord to dump out a wave file, and even then it would only work with my crappy onboard sound card, not the off-board one I use to interface with my mixing desk. So we tried, but it sucked. Even if it had worked, I’m not sure we would have got the same energy and atmosphere as when we record in the studio. […]

the free version works great.

DimDim works almost like Webex or Microsoft Live meeting.
